MP speaks out against unfairness

Yesterday in the Houses of Parliament, John Baron MP attended an event at the request of South Essex College. The event, entitled ‘No Free Lunch’, highlighted the anomaly that 16-18 year-olds from disadvantaged backgrounds are eligible for free school meals if they are studying in a school sixth form, but are not if they go to a Further Education or Sixth Form College.

 John said,

“This situation is clearly unfair, and ought to change. Entitlement to free school meals should be according to need, not on where 16-18 year olds choose to study. I fully support this campaign.”

“This is affecting 300,000 students across the country, and many in my constituency. The money could come from our ballooning EU Budget contributions or from our aid to India programme – a country with its own space, nuclear and aid programme.”
