Prime Minister believes status quo is viable
Today in the House of Commons, the Prime Minister, Rt Hon David Cameron MP, gave a statement following last week’s European Council meeting. During the meeting, the leaders of the 27 EU member states discussed proposals for a Eurozone banking union and the situation in Syria.
During the statement, John asked,
“Given the Eurozone is pushing towards ever closer integration, does the Prime Minister believe that the status quo as to Britain’s position, in the EU but outside the Eurozone, has a viable future in the long term?”
The Prime Minister replied that he did believe Britain’s position is viable, and that the European Union would have to accommodate those Member States who are clear they will not join the Eurozone.
John said afterwards,
“The Eurozone is pushing for political union in order to make fiscal union work. This will produce tension with non-Eurozone members of the EU. We need to be seeking long-term safeguards, rather than reacting to ad-hoc arrangements. We also need a referendum.”
