MP in favour of ending discrimination
Today in the House of Commons, John Baron MP will vote to legalise same-sex marriage. Neither Labour nor the Conservatives will be whipping the key vote, as this issue is seen as a matter of conscience – as was the case with the vote in 2004 to legalise Civil Partnerships.
John said,
“I gave this matter a lot of thought, as I know feelings understandably run high on both sides of the debate. However, I do not believe we should discriminate against couples who wish to marry simply because they are gay, lesbian or bisexual. This legislation rights the wrong of the present situation.”
“Some have concerns about religious freedom, and I have raised these with the Government on behalf of constituents. The Government has listened. Protections are written into the Bill to protect those religious institutions who do not wish to perform same-sex marriage ceremonies, and the Equality Act has been amended to make clear it is not unlawful discrimination for a religious minister to refuse to marry a same-sex couple.”
“Civil Partnerships caused some controversy when they were first legalised. Now they are rightly a universally accepted part of the social landscape. I will continue to support the legislation as it passes through Parliament.”
