MP raises the ability of public services to cope
Today in the House of Commons, during Home Office Questions, John Baron MP pressed the Government as to its preparations once transitional controls regarding Romanian and Bulgarian immigration expire in December. Presently, these controls prevent these citizens from working in the UK.
John asked,
“Given that the Government can not produce an estimate, and that the National Minimum Wage here is five to six times larger than it is in Romania or Bulgaria, how confident is the Government that our public services can cope with any surge in immigration?”
The Government responded that they were looking into this, and will ensure the welfare system is not abused.
John said afterwards,
“This is a matter of real concern. The Labour Government in 2004 made a huge error in its forecasts by a factor of 30. This must not happen again.”
