MP says Eastleigh results indicate Prime Minister ought to legislate now for a future referendum
John Baron MP is sponsoring a Bill through Parliament which calls upon the Prime Minister to bring forward the legislation for an in/out EU referendum into this Parliament, to provide for a vote in the next. The Bill had its first reading on 6th February, and John is continuing with his campaign.
John said,
“The Eastleigh by-election was always going to be tough for the Conservatives, but we can no longer simply write UKIP off as a protest party. The EU does matter to the British public. I welcomed David Cameron’s bold promise of a referendum should he be Prime Minister after the next election, but I believe he should go further.”
“There is no downside to bringing forward the enabling legislation into this Parliament, in preparation for a vote in the next. It is in keeping with the Prime Minister’s timeframe, and would address public mistrust of election promises.”
