MP highlights end of EU transitional controls

Yesterday in the House of Commons, during Home Office questions, John Baron MP questioned the Home Secretary, Rt Hon Theresa May MP, about immigration, and the Government’s response to the ending of EU transitional controls which currently prevent Romanian and Bulgarian citizens from working in Britain. In a speech before Home Office questions, the Prime Minister announced tighter immigration controls.

In the House of Commons, John asked,

“Britain has always been tolerant of persecuted minorities, and has seen the benefits of immigration, but what more can the Government do to control immigration for the benefit of public services, and how confident are they that the Prime Minister’s proposals will be implemented in time for the ending of the EU transitional controls in December?”

The Home Secretary replied that the Government would look at the ‘pull’ factors encouraging migration to the UK, and would also ensure all Departments are made aware of how migration affects them, and how it can be controlled. The Government may bring forward legislation for the measures the Prime Minister announced.

John said afterwards,

“We must learn from the previous Government’s mistakes and better control immigration. This requires co-ordinated Government. I and others will continue to press on this issue.”
