John Baron MP: The Twelve Days of the European Union – 10

10 – The EU costs us £10 billion each year

As we approach the final furlong to the EU referendum, and with the necessary apologies to the ‘Twelve Days of Christmas’, John Baron MP is sharing his ‘Twelve Days of the European Union’, setting out why we should vote to leave on 23rd June. Further daily instalments to follow.

Under the current EU budget, Britain commits approximately £19 billion to the EU each year, and receives back £9 billion in rebate and grants supporting in large part EU projects – leaving a net cost of £10 billion each year. This may well increase should the EU budget rise in the next few years, as is expected. The UK is one of the few net contributor nations to the EU, and the £10 billion we stand to save could be better spent on our own priorities – these could include the NHS, schools or substantial tax cuts for every household.

John said,

“£10 billion a year would be saved if we left the EU. This would also stop the absurd financial merry-go-round by which £19 billion is committed and £9 billion is returned in order to fund in large part EU pet projects and services. It’s time to spend this money on our own priorities.”

Quote of the Day:

‘The European Union must take a decisive step towards a federal economic government’
(Andrew Duff, Liberal Democrat MEP, 1999 – 2014)
