MP presses Prime Minister to confirm WTO after 29th March if talks unsuccessful
In the House of Commons this afternoon, the Prime Minister gave a Statement.
John asked,
“I suggest those remainers trying to hijack Government business and the Brexit process already believe people did not know what they were doing when they voted to leave the EU. But now they seem to believe MPs did not know what they were doing when voting for Article 50 given WTO was always the backstop. Parliament can not become the executive, and the referendum result must be respected by Parliament.”
“Can she confirm, for the sake of clarity on the opposition benches, that not only will we be leaving on 29th March, but we will be leaving on WTO terms should talks with the EU prove unsuccessful – terms by which we trade profitably with the rest of the world?”
The Prime Minister responded that she hoped talks about a deal would be successful.
John said afterwards,
“There can be no fudge. At the last General Election, 80% of the electorate voted to leave the Customs Union and the Single Market given both main parties’ manifestoes. It confirmed we must respect the referendum result. There must be no extension of Article 50 or a second referendum.”
