MP: we are taking back control of our waters

Yesterday the House of Commons passed the Second Reading of the Fisheries Bill, it having completed its stages in the House of Lords before the summer recess. The Bill sets up the framework for managing our fishing waters as an independent coastal state, enabling the British Government to control who comes into UK waters through a new foreign vessel licensing regime, and ends the current automatic rights for EU vessels to fish in UK waters. It will also establish fisheries management plans, as well as UK-wide fisheries objectives. These will ensure that decisions about our fisheries are made in a transparent manner which also respects the devolved administrations.

John said,

“I welcome the Fisheries Bill, as it will allow the British Government to take back control of our waters like any other independent coastal state, and ends the automatic right for EU vessels to use our fishing grounds whilst also managing our fisheries to ensure they remain sustainable for the future.”
