MP congratulates Department for International Trade
This afternoon it was announced that the United States has agreed to suspend tariffs on a range of British products, including single malt whiskies, cheeses, machinery and cashmere goods. These were imposed as part of the long-running trade dispute between the US and the EU about aircraft industry subsidies. Britain unilaterally dropped its own retaliatory tariffs against the US when we left the transition period in January and regained full control of our international trade policy. Since then the Government has been lobbying the US to drop its tariffs against UK products, and today’s agreement will last for four months while the US and UK seek a long-term agreement. Meanwhile, US tariffs will continue to apply to EU goods.
John said,
“This is excellent news, and I congratulate our team at the Department for International Trade on this significant achievement which is only possible because we have left the EU. I hope this presages further and greater success on the road to a full UK/US free trade agreement, which would be strongly in both countries’ best interests.”
