MP says NLW should continue to increase above inflation
Today in Treasury Questions, John Baron MP questioned the Government on the National Living Wage, which the Chancellor announced in his Budget speech last week would increase to £8.91/hour from April.
In the Chamber, John asked,
“In welcoming the Government’s generous economic support packages and this increase in the National Living Wage, and can the Minister commit to further increasing it ahead of inflation in the years ahead in order to help achieve our One Nation agenda and ensure work pays? Combined with an effective and controlled immigration policy, this will also encourage businesses to invest in their workforce and in R&D generally, which will improve productivity.”
The Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury, Kemi Badenoch MP, responded that increasing the National Living Wage will be considered as part of the package in future budgets. She also stated that the Government recognised the importance of raising productivity.
John said afterwards,
“Raising the National Living Wage is a positive step which helps to drive forward the Conservatives’ One Nation agenda, and I am pleased the Government recognises this and is acting accordingly.”
