MP pleased Government listened to consultations
The Government has announced its response to its consultation on strengthening Police powers to tackle unauthorised encampments, to which John Baron MP contributed last year. It will shortly bring forward legislation to ensure that the Police receive the powers they require to deal with unauthorised encampments, including new criminal offenses of residing in a vehicle on land without consent and strengthening existing powers to remove trespassers on land.
John said,
“I am pleased the Government has followed through on the two recent consultations on this issue and is bringing forward new legislation to ensure the Police have increased powers to act against unauthorised encampments, which we know all too well can cause great distress and expense to our communities, especially when public land is affected.”
“The legislation will have to be scrutinised in greater detail when it comes before Parliament, but these seem very positive steps. At the same time, I am pleased the Government has ensured that the rights of ramblers and others to enjoy the countryside are not inadvertently affected.”
