MP: Presses Government to review in fortnight
Last night in the House of Commons, MPs voted overwhelmingly on a cross-party basis to support the extension of the current coronavirus restrictions until 19th July. This is in response to the rise of the Delta variant, which is currently leading to a doubling in infections every 11 days. The extra four weeks will allow the NHS to administer about 10 million more jabs, in particular to finish the job of giving second doses to all those in the top nine priority groups, as defined by the JCVI, which are projected to account for 99% of all deaths from covid-19.
John said,
“We were all looking forward to the ending of the current restrictions next Monday, but unfortunately the data on the Delta variant does not support this as a wise course of action. The next four weeks will allow many millions more to receive first and second doses of our lifesaving vaccines, and I am urging the Government to use the two-week review point to see if the data allows us to lift the restrictions before 19th July.”
“As ever, I strongly encourage everyone to come forward for both of their doses when they get the call from the NHS – everyone aged 21 or over can now book their jabs on the NHS website, and this will soon expand to include everyone 18 or over.”
