MP: Legislation follows Conservative manifesto
Today John Baron MP is supporting the Second Reading of the Animal Welfare (Kept Animals) Bill, which puts into legislation several pledges from the 2019 Conservative election manifesto. The Bill’s measures include banning the live export of livestock; giving the Police new powers to protect livestock from dangerous dogs; preventing primates being kept as pets; giving protection to additional species (such as llamas and ostriches); and placing restrictions on the number of pets (dogs, cats and ferrets) which can be imported on a non-commercial basis.
John said,
“As someone who believes strongly in animal welfare, I welcome this legislation which makes good on our 2019 election manifesto. Banning live animal exports has long been high on the list of welfare measures, but unfortunately our membership of the EU prevented us from stopping this. However, outside the EU we have the freedom to legislate as we wish, and I look forward to doing so this evening.”
