MP welcomes Government’s concession after last month’s rebellion
Today the Environment Bill returns to the Commons. Last month John rebelled during a previous stage of the Environment Bill by voting for an amendment which would have compelled water companies to improve water quality by reducing sewage discharges. Though the vote was lost, the Government acknowledged that this issue required further attention, and a positive Government amendment was inserted during the latest Lords stage in response. John is supporting the Government amendment today.
John said,
“It is good news that the Government listened to those of us who voted against it, in favour of the Duke of Wellington’s amendment last month. I am pleased the Government’s amendment, which I will be supporting today, now places a legal duty on water companies to progressively reduce sewage discharges. The emphasis on public health will particularly benefit swimmers and canoeists, and robust enforcement action will be taken against water companies if sufficient progress is not made.”
