MP: Devil is in the detail
Yesterday the Government announced that leaseholders living in buildings over 11 metres will not face any costs to fix dangerous cladding, with developers and cladding companies paying instead. £27 million will see fire alarms installed in all high-risk buildings, and the Secretary of State, Rt Hon Michael Gove MP, undertook to work with Parliamentarians to enshrine further protections for leaseholders into law.
John Baron MP has campaigned against leaseholders having anything to pay to remedy fire defects, including cladding, which were not their fault, whether external or internal, and has signed the amendments to the Building Safety Bill tabled by Royston Smith MP and Stephen McPartland MP.
John said,
“I welcome these important steps in the right direction, but continue to believe that leaseholders should not be liable for any costs of remedying fire safety problems that were not their fault, whether these problems are external or internal.”
“However, I am encouraged by the Secretary of State’s assurances yesterday in Parliament that the Government will work further to protect leaseholders from these costs. The devil is usually in the detail, and I await further developments.”
