MP: direct military intervention would lead to wider war
Today in the House of Commons John Baron MP asked the Government to confirm its intentions regarding direct military involvement in Ukraine.
John said:
“In part because of humanitarian concerns, there are siren voices which continue wanting to commit us to a no-fly zone in Ukraine. Notwithstanding existing support to Ukraine and our Article 5 commitment to NATO, will the Government confirm that it has no intention of intervening directly … because it would lead to a wider war?”
In responding, the Rt. Hon. James Cleverly, Foreign Office Minister said that, although the Government would continue supporting Ukraine, it will abide by its NATO commitments and not intervene directly because this would lead to a wider war and support President Putin’s claim of NATO aggression.
John said afterwards:
“We must continue to do all we can to support the people of Ukraine in providing humanitarian relief and weaponry. Longer term, we need also to substantially increase our hard and soft power capabilities in the fight for democracy globally. But we cannot intervene militarily as this would lead to a wider conflict – and something which would not help Ukrainian civilians.”
