MP says fundamental mission change warrants further scrutiny
Today John Baron MP has called for the recall of Parliament given that it is not due to sit for a couple of weeks. This follows a joint statement by the Prime Minister, President Sarkozy and President Obama stating that regime change in Libya is now the desired end. The statement acknowledges that this goes beyond UN Resolution 1973.
John said:
“When Parliament discussed and voted on this matter, the talk was of humanitarian aid. This statement confirms that regime change is now the desired end, and this is a fundamental shift in policy. Had Parliament known this at the time the Debate may have taken a different course. This is why Parliament needs to be recalled now. Regime change is illegal under international law”
“The African Union suggested a solution based on UN Resolution 1973 which included a ceasefire and protection of civilians. This was accepted by Gaddafi but rejected by the rebels, which suggests regime change has been on the table for a little while.”
“One wonders why we have had this statement from the three leaders now. Perhaps it illustrates the frustration at the lack of support from NATO Allies. It is interesting to note that the Allies have provided lots of fighter aircraft to enforce a no-fly zone, but very few ground attack aircraft to attack Gaddafi’s forces. This perhaps tells its own story. Could it be that some of our Allies are uncomfortable with the mission of regime change.”
