MP asks travellers to leave peacefully

John Baron MP, for Basildon and Billericay, has welcomed the court decision refusing the last ditch attempt by the travellers to delay eviction of the illegal traveller site at Dale Farm, Basildon. After visits by Vanessa Redgrave and local Bishops, John has also criticised the involvement of various pro-traveller parties, and once again appealed to the travellers to leave peacefully.

 John said:

“The courts have once again confirmed the travellers have broken the rules. The law must be enforced equally and fairly otherwise we discriminate against the law-abiding majority. No one group or individual can be above the law.”

“The intervention of actresses and Bishops at this late stage just gives false hope to the travellers. These people should instead focus on the difference between right and wrong. The 4,000 people on Basildon Council’s housing list do not break the law to get preferential treatment – nor should travellers. As for the Anarchists, if they step out of line I expect the law to deal with them.”

“Even at this late stage, I once again call on the travellers to leave peacefully. No one wants to see the misery of a forced eviction. If not, the eviction will proceed for it is only fair and right that the law is enforced without exception.”
