MP warns of dangers of military action

Today in the House of Commons, John Baron MP challenged the Foreign Secretary on the issue of Iran and the nuclear issue. A recent report from the International Atomic Energy Authority (IAEA) noted concerns over Iranian nuclear activity, but did not provide any concrete evidence of a nuclear weapons programme. Meanwhile, implied threats of military intervention continue. The exchange in the House of Commons took place against the backdrop of Iranian students storming the British Embassy in Tehran.

In the House of Commons John said:

“The IAEA’s latest report revealed no concrete evidence of an Iranian nuclear weapons programme. There is no ‘smoking gun’. Does the Foreign Secretary therefore agree that implicit threats of military action merely serve to rally domestic support for the hardliners in Iran and drive such programmes as there are further underground?”

The Foreign Secretary disagreed with John about the significance of the IAEA’s report and replied that the Government would push ahead with its implementation of sanctions.

 Afterwards, John said,

“Surely our recent interventions in the region remind us that military action should always be the measure of last resort. A military strike would be disastrous. We can and should go the extra mile for peace.”
